ディストリクト役員（エリアディレクター＆ディビジョンディレクター）として活動して1年半が経ちました。
月並みですが、ぜひお伝えしたいことは、ディストリクト役員、やってみてください、ということです。
なぜなら、その経験がとても貴重だからです。
ディストリクト役員になってよかったこと。それは、クラブだけでは知り得なかった、たくさんの方とお知り合いになれたこと、そして、より多くの会を主催する中で、人とどう接すればよいのかを、経験して学ぶことができたことです。
この経験は、本当に素晴らしいものでした。
エリアディレクターとして活動した時には、エリアの４クラブの皆さんと、知り合う機会に恵まれ、スピーチから、普段の会話から、また、メールでの個人的なやりとりから、ものすごく多くのことを学ぶことができました。エリアディレクターにならなかったら、世代を超えて「ゆる募」や「乙です」と言ったコミュニケーションをとることはなかったでしょうし、ホームページを作成する、ブログを更新する、と言ったことも、行うことはなかったでしょう。また、同じエリアディレクターの皆さんと、ディビジョン内で活動することで、さらに多くの経験をし、多くの学びを得ることができました。人前で話す機会も圧倒的に増え、失敗を繰り返し、よりよいコミュニケーションを自然に積み重ねることができました。これは、本当に特別な経験だと思います。
ディビジョンディレクターとして活動している今は、本当に多くの方とお知り合いになることができ、また、様々な課題に向き合う中で、たくさんのサポートいただける皆さんにお会いすることができました。ディビジョン・ディレクターにならなければ、エリアディレクターの皆さんと深くお付き合いすることもなかったでしょうし、各クラブの役員の皆様、クラブ員の皆様ともお会いすることがなかったと思います。そして、今回、本当のリーダーシップを身につけた方から、直接お話を伺うことができるという、貴重な体験を積むことができました。
多くの方にとっては、時間が奪われる現在のトーストマスターズの役職に前向きになれない方も多いのではないでしょうか。私もそうでした。あるいは、役職になることで責任を求められたり、人前で恥をかいたり、そういう役職には前向きになれない方も多いのではないでしょうか。私もそうでした。
でも、振り返りますと、時間の管理は、すべて自分次第だと気付いたのです。
時間がないことを理由に、他の方にお願いするのがうまくなったり、早起きの習慣が身についたり、移動中の時間も無駄にしないという習慣が身につき、一日をより充実した時間として過ごすことができるようになりました。また、楽しい飲み会やイベントも増え、体重も増えましたが、肝臓も丈夫になりました。素敵な方と過ごす時間も増え、人生そのものがカラフルなものになりました。
責任や、人前でかく恥も、トーストマスターズの中では、お許しいただくことができ、失うものは本当に少なかったです。もしこれが、仕事だったら、私の転職回数は、もっと増えたことでしょう。むしろ、トーストマスターズで失敗しただけ、仕事では失敗しなくなり、仕事ではあたかもデキる人のように振る舞うことができました。結果、昇進や昇給といった実益を得ることが、思いの外、舞い込んできたのです。
もちろん、役員であればいいことばかりではなく、苦い経験も多々ありました。
批判や、反対意見、無言の抵抗、意見の相違、実際に身を削るような失敗。これもまた、経験する必要のないものばかりですが、実際に経験をしてみると、仕事の場に、応用することもでき、事前の準備ができたように思います。その結果、組織の中で信頼される機会がより多くなったと思います。
ディストリクト役員の経験で、トーストマスターズの中で得られることが、もっともっと加速します。
同じ時間とお金の投資をするなら、リターンが多いほうがいいと思いませんか？
私は、実際経験するまでは、リターンよりも、失うものの大きさしか、目に見えませんでした。
経験者の方に聞いても、私の想像力では、そのリターンを描くことはできませんでした。経験してないのだから、描けませんよね。
だからこそ、お伝えしたいのです。
リターンのほうが、大きいです。
精神的にも、実際のリターンとしても、です。
すぐに得られなくても数年後には、必ずリターンが大きいはずです。
まだ時期尚早と思われる方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。
私の所属したクラブでは、あたかも学校の昇級のように、複数のクラブ役員を経験していかないと、クラブ会長にはなれないという慣習的階段がありました。クラブではそのような状態なのに、ふと周りを見ると、１、２年で会長になり、２、３年でディストリクト役員になる人をみては、うらやましくも思っていました。
とはいえ、一年目につまづき、三年目から再スタートし、実力的にも乏しかった私には、七年目にディストリクト役員になるくらいが、ちょうどよい道だったと振り返ることができます。
日本では、もっと早いうちにディストリクト役員を経験されている方もたくさんいらっしゃいます。ぜひ、皆さんの中で、やってみようかな、という気持ちがおありなら、ぜひやってみてください。
ディストリクト役員は、トーストマスターズの中で経験できる、またとない機会です。
ぜひ、エリアディレクター、ディビジョンディレクターを経験されることをお勧めします。

It has been a year and a half since I started serving you as a District officer, means Area Director and Division Director.
As a matter of course, what I would like to tell you is that you may want to take a District officer role.
The reason why I think is the experiences you shall have are so precious.
The good things I experienced as a District officer were that l could know many people whom I could not meet if I only stay in club activities and I could learn through the experiences how to relate with the people while I led more events.
These experiences were simply fantastic.
While I was working as an Area Director, I could relish the opportunities to know the people of the four clubs in the area and learn enormous lessons by listening to their speeches, having casual conversations and exchanging personal interactions.
If I had not become an Area Director, I could never use some phrases made by younger generations and never created any homepage nor updated blogs.
Furthermore, I could learn more through more experiences by collaborating with the area directors in the same division.
As I increased the opportunities to deliver speeches in front of the audience tremendously, I could accumulate the better communication skills naturally by multiple failures. I think this experiencing system is truly special one.
Currently I am working as a Division Director. I could gain my acquaintances extraordinarily and meet with many people who supported me in facing against various challenges.
If I were not a Division Director, I did not get closer with Area Directors and I could not have chances to meet with respective club officers and members.
And last but not least, I could have invaluable experiences that I could listen to the keys of leadership directly from the leaders who obtain true leadership.
I assume most of you cannot feel positive to take time-consuming District officer roles in current Toastmasters activities.
Neither could I.
And I assume most of you cannot be positive to take roles require responsibilities and make you shamed in public in case.
Nor could I.
However, I noticed that time management is owned by myself through experiences.
I could become better at asking requests for others due to less time.
I could get awake earlier consistently.
I could learn how to spend time more efficiently and effectively without wasting time in transportation.
And I could get more parties and events with fun by gaining my weight and toughness in resolving alcohol.
I gained time to spend with attractive people and my life could turn into colorful one.
Speaking of responsibilities and public shames, I had really fewer damages and forgiven in Toastmasters activities.
If these were at workplaces, I had to change my jobs more frequently.
Rather I can say I made less failures at workplace as I did in Toastmasters activities and I could act as if I were a top-notch business man at workplace.
Consequently, I could encounter an opportunity of promotion and salary increase as tangible benefit beyond my expectation.
Surely I have to mention that I experienced not always the good things but also the bitter ones to be a District officer.
I had criticism, objections, silent resistance, conflicts, and failures with actual damages.
All of these things should not be experienced, however I could be prepared to apply these experiences at workplace with actual experiences.
Consequently, I could have more opportunities to be trusted in the organizations more frequently.
I can say you will be accelerated to gain the benefits through Toastmasters with the experiences to be a District Officer.
Why don't you think it is better to have more returns with the same amount of time and money as your investments?
I could not visualize the returns but only losses before I could experience.
Even I asked some experienced officers, I could not visualize those returns with my imagination capability.
I can take it for granted that I had no experiences.
That is the reason why I want to tell you.
You will receive more returns if you work as a District Officer.
In terms of both mental and actual returns.
I ensure that the returns will definitely be larger than losses at the end in some years even if you cannot get soon.
Some of you may think that you are not matured enough as a toastmaster.
Actually the club to I ever belonged had a conventional ladder that we cannot be the club president without having experiences as other multiple club officers roles for years as if the grade system in an elementary school.
Although I was stuck on the ladder, I could observe some members in other clubs who became the club president in a year or two and became a District Officer in a couple of years and I felt envy.
Looking back now, I admit that it was appropriate for me to become a District Officer in my seventh year as I crippled in the first year and restarted in the third year with less skills to be recognized.
In Japan, we see many people who experienced the District officer roles much earlier than you think.
If you have a little idea to become a District Officer, I strongly encourage you to step forward.
District Officer role is the second-to-none opportunity that you can experience in Toastmasters activities.
I strongly recommend you to experience the role of Area Director or Division Director, from the bottom of my heart.
